Fluid compressional properties sensing at microscale using a longitudinal bulk acoustic wave transducer operated in a pulse-echo scheme

Acoustic devices have been widely used as smart chemical and biochemical sensors since they are sensitive to mechanical, chemical, optical or electrical perturbations on their surfaces; making them a reliable option for noninvasive detection of changes in physical properties liquid samples real-time applications. Here we present longitudinal acoustic wave device study compressional liquids microfluidic systems, with the particularity pulse-echo mode operation. We studied at microscale interaction between waves samples, interrogating fluids short pulses ultrasound GHz, finding direct relationship magnitude bulk modulus specific impedance amplitude output voltage produced by echoes received aluminum nitride transducer. Analytical expressions FEM simulations support mechanism, while applications such classification concentration change solutions experimentally demonstrate method. This contribution overcomes current restrictions film resonators fragility operation environments, high manufacturing cost limitations regarding narrow microchannels; offering an alternative that demand ultra-low consumption, miniaturization, versatility (it offers multi-frequency 1 – 10 GHz range) ease readout (peak voltage).
